Choosing where to start: the Captures tab

Updated on November 4th, 2026

Before you open qPole, pick the capture you want to start working on. Turning a capture on, loads its point cloud into the 3D view, so the poles in it are ready to work on as soon as you open your project.

This choice doesn't limit what you can do in qPole. A qPole project covers every capture on the site, and you can work on poles from any of them.

Turning on a capture in the Captures tab, then opening the qPole tab.

Turn on the capture you want to start with

Open the site and choose the Captures tab in the left panel.

Find the capture you want to start with. Click its eye icon (Show capture) to turn it on. Its point cloud loads in the 3D view.

The Captures tab with one capture turned on. The eye icon on each row shows or hides that capture.

Turn off any captures you don't need right now with Hide capture (shown with the eyeball crossed out). Fewer clouds in the 3D view means a faster, less cluttered view.

Choose the qPole tab.

When you first open a site, its first completed capture is already turned on. Captures that are still processing can't be shown until they finish (Capture must be completed before it can be shown).

What qPole shows from each capture

The 2D map shows every pole in the project, and all the captures. Captures that are not actively loaded will be grey.

The 3D view shows only the poles in captures that are turned on, so you never see a pole floating without its point cloud.

The 2D map shows the poles from both captures on this site: here the accepted poles of one capture in green and the new poles of the other in blue.

Going to a pole in another capture

You don't need to go back to the Captures tab to work on a pole from a different capture. When you go to a pole whose capture isn't turned on, by clicking it on the 2D map, in the pole strip, or with Next, qPole switches captures for you:

It turns off the captures that are showing and turns on the pole's capture. A message shows Unloading … and loading … while the new cloud loads.

When the cloud has loaded, qPole flies to the pole and shows Showing with the capture's name.

Going to a pole in the other capture: qPole loads that capture and shows Showing qPole Capture 2.

The pole from the second capture, with the message that its capture is now showing.

If you turn that capture off again while you're on the pole, qPole leaves it off.

Where two captures overlap, the same pole can be detected in both. qPole marks these as duplicates and lets you choose which one to keep. See Poles: reviewing detected poles.
