Topographic Surveys

Learn how to capture a site with higher accuracy for topographic surveys

Updated on April 30th, 2026

Currently, captures should be limited to:

  1. Outdoor areas with GPS and good lighting conditions.
  2. A minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes per capture. Subdivide into multiple capture if you need to capture larger areas.
  3. Capturing objects within 5 meters (15 feet) of capturing path to ensure the highest quality

To Capture:

  • Pick a starting point for your site capture. A location with a few distinct features like a sign.
  • Think of capturing an area like you mow a lawn if the area is big such as a parking lot, with back-and-forth rows, separated by roughly 5-10 meters (15-30 feet) between passes
  • Continue these rows until you have completed the area of interest.

Corridor Captures

  • Split corridor into tiled areas so each section of roadway is a capture
  • maximum 30-minutes per capture
  • multiple parrallel lines in opposite directions
  • walk along features of interest - such as for curb lines
  • loop closures at intersections

For highest detail!

For the highest level of detail and quality, be sure to circle around objects that are of interest (buildings, power poles, pedestals, etc.) and even increase the number of capture lines in your path.
